What is the difference between Kinyarwanda and Kirundi?

Kinyarwanda and Kirundi are very closely related languages. Both belong to the Bantu language family, like Kiswahili (Swahili). Although they share the same linguistic group, they present certain notable differences.

Two languages used in different countries

Kinyarwanda is primarily spoken in Rwanda, while Kirundi is mainly used in Burundi. This leads to variations in vocabulary and grammar. Although both languages have many words in common, certain terms differ. For example, “yes” is said “yego” in Kinyarwanda and “ego” in Kirundi. These distinctions, although often slight, can sometimes require explanations for clear communication between speakers of the two languages. Why learn Kinyarwanda or Kirundi?

A speaker mastering one of these languages will be able to understand the other without great difficulty, although adjustments are sometimes necessary depending on the context. For a learner, it is advisable to focus on learning only one of these two languages, with the help of a teacher who exclusively masters this language, in order to avoid any confusion regarding vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and intonation.
